Can You Install a Gas Cooktop Yourself

No, an owner cannot. Queensland reserves gas work for licensed gasfitters, so connecting a cooktop, altering a gas line or certifying the result is unlawful without a gas work licence. Gas work covers installing, altering, repairing, testing and certifying a gas system, its pipework and its connections, whether the fuel is natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

The licence exists because gas carries real risk. A connection done wrong can leak, and a leak near a flame is dangerous. Before anyone touches your stove, ask to see the gas work licence; a legitimate tradesperson carries it and shows it willingly.

From Gas Point to Leak Test

The job runs from the gas point to a leak test and a signed certificate, in this order:

  1. Connect

    The gasfitter joins the appliance to its gas point, following the manufacturer's instructions for that model.

  2. Set the clearances

    The installation instructions state the distances to the rangehood, cupboards and combustible surfaces, and the gasfitter fits to those measurements.

  3. Leak-test

    Every new joint and connection gets tested for leaks before the gasfitter leaves.

  4. Certify

    The licence holder hands over a gas system compliance certificate immediately on completion, confirming the installation is compliant.

Keep that certificate with your property papers; it is the record that the work passed.

What Your Gas Supply Means for the Job

Gas reaches a house by pipe from a metered network or from LPG cylinders, and an appliance leaves the factory set up for one fuel or the other. Before the cooktop goes in, the gasfitter confirms the supply will carry the extra demand. The checks cover:

  • how much gas the cylinders can vaporise, and how they are stored;
  • the gas meter and its capacity;
  • the sizing of the pipes feeding the appliance.

On a metered supply, the licence holder notifies the gas network operator before installing a new gas system, and also when the work adds 100 megajoules per hour or more of demand. The notice states the work and the added load. Converting an appliance between LPG and natural gas is gas work too: the gasfitter fits the maker's conversion parts and tests the result.

Safety Features to Look for When Buying

Three features mark a safe gas cooktop, so check for all three when you shop:

  1. A gas device approval badge

    under the national scheme, showing the appliance passed its checks.

  2. A flame failure device,

    which cuts the gas if the flame goes out.

  3. Automatic reignition,

    which relights the burner by itself.

Most appliances leave the factory set for one fuel, so a cooktop moving from a natural gas house to an LPG one needs a conversion first.

What Affects Gas Cooktop Installation Cost

The price turns on the connection, the appliance, the supply verification and any fuel conversion, and you get a fixed quote before any work starts. The drivers:

  • whether the cooktop lands on a gas point that is already there or needs a new pipe run from the meter or cylinders;
  • the appliance itself: a benchtop unit, an inbuilt oven or a freestanding cooker each connects differently, and the burner count changes the job;
  • the supply checks above, which take time on any install;
  • a conversion between LPG and natural gas, where the maker supplies conversion parts for the model.

With flat-rate pricing there are no surprises: the figure on the quote is the figure on the invoice.

Kitchens in the Postwar Houses

Census figures put the suburb at 1,728 homes, and 93.5 per cent of them are detached houses built between the 1940s and the 1980s. Those kitchens along Newman Road and the surrounding streets have usually been renovated in stages, so a gas cooktop installation often replaces an older electric unit beside cabinetry that was never designed for a flame. The gasfitter checks the clearances against what is actually there, not what the brochure promised.

Cooktop Installation Questions From Geebung

Call (07) 3523 7172

Who is legally allowed to install a gas cooktop in Queensland?

Only a licensed gasfitter. Queensland treats installing, altering and certifying gas systems as licensed work, and you are entitled to sight the gas work licence before anyone starts.

Can I install a gas cooktop myself?

No, a home owner cannot legally do it. Installing, altering and certifying gas work is licensed work, and a do-it-yourself connection in a kitchen is unsafe and unlawful. A licensed gasfitter does the connection, the leak test and the certificate.

Can I swap an electric stove for gas in Geebung?

Yes, provided the gas side is done by a licensed gasfitter. You need a gas point: an existing line, a new pipe run, or an LPG cylinder setup, after the supply is checked for the extra demand.

Does a gas cooktop need clearance from the rangehood and walls?

Yes, it does. The manufacturer's installation instructions set the distances to the rangehood, cupboards and combustible surfaces, and the gasfitter fits to those measurements exactly.

Can I move my gas cooktop to another spot in the kitchen?

Yes, but shifting the connection alters the gas system, which makes it licensed gas work. The gasfitter runs the new pipe in your Geebung kitchen, leak-tests it and issues the compliance certificate when the job is finished.
